Beginning Class
As student enter the room there should
be one person from each table gathering the folders and their Science Journals from the crates on the countertop.
While the Lab Leaders are doing this, all other students should be working on their BrainBooster silently. Please remind
them, as they sometimes forget to do so.
BrainBooster
Students will have some brain teaser type question that they will be responsible for coming up with an answer for in
their Science Journals. In their journal they should have today's date, the "title," the "category," and their "solution," as
well as an explanation of how they came up with their answer.
Allow them 5 minutes from the beginning
of class to complete this opening procedure. Then ask "Who is going to be the HERO today?" Student will start
standing. Ask for a number between 1 & 30. The three closest will have the opportunity to become the HERO.
Whoever is the closest to your number will go first, etc. (they must stand on their chair and speak in a clearly understandable
public speaking voice). If they get the answer correct AND the explanation correct reward them with 10 tickets
and then refer to them as HERO for the rest of the class period. If they do not get both parts correct, simply tell
them that they are wrong and have them be seated, and move on to the next student. If no one gets the answer, too bad,
the answer will be given the next class period.
Leaving Class During Class Time
Only one student to leave the classroom
at a time. Make sure they take a hall pass with them.
Classroom Rules:
- Be Prompt
- Be Prepared
- Be Neat
- Be Considerate
- Follow Instructions
- Instant Obedience
Throughout the course of the class period walk about the tables and make sure that they are following directions.
If they talk a little that is okay as long as they are getting their work done. Those who are doing exactly what they
are supposed to or are simply behaving very well, please reward them with a blue ticket (in the little box that is on my desk)
and make it fairly public as you reward them, and for what they are being rewarded.
Remind students periodically throughout the period that whatever is not completed in class
is homework due the next class period.
Consequences:
Each time a student breaks a rule, take a ticket.
Removal of tickets is cumulative from class to
class.
One ticket removed = Warning
Two tickets removed = Student Conference
Three tickets removed = Parent Phone Call
Four tickets removed = Teacher Detention w/Parent Contact
Five tickets removed = Office Referral
Detentions:
Please fill out the students name, Student ID#, grade, date, and reason for detention. When filling in the blank
for when the detention needs to be served on the following Tuesday in room 613 from 3:15 - 4:15 pm.
Quiet Signal:
- Hold up three fingers up in the air and slowly give a countdown. ("3" means "freeze"; "2" means "stop and look at
me"; and "1" means "listen, because I have something to say that you need to hear.") By the time that all three fingers
are down all should be quiet and all should have their attentions on you.
- Give a verbal countdown from three. The same response should follow.
- Ring the bell on the desk three times. The same response should follow.
Individual Work
If they are doing individual
work I will have them sitting at their seats quietly in order to accomplish the daily tasks.
Classroom Discussions/Popcorn ReadingWe often have classroom discussions. Generally
I will have the class popcorn read the lesson and then we discuss it as we go along and then also some more at the end of
the lesson. During popcorn reading students will stand up and read, a minimum
of one sentence and a maximum of 1 paragraph at a time. After they have completed
reading their paragraph they will then popcorn another student. If a girl has
just finished reading she will popcorn a boy, and likewise a boy will popcorn a girl.
Periodically throughout the course of the reading I will stop the class and we will discuss what has just been read. At the end of the lesson further questions will be asked in review. I generally also provide examples, etc. during the course of the class as needed.
